“Mama Said”, the big trend on TikTok

TikTok‘s latest trend involves users explaining what they’ve allowed themselves to do, because “mama said it was okay”.

Videos participating in this trend use Lukas Graham’s hit Mama Said and feature users stating something they do now or used to do as a child which was frowned upon for various reasons.

When the lyrics: “When mama said that it was okay/ Mama said that it was quite alright” plays, they show their reason for thinking their actions are acceptable.

In other videos TikTokers will use the trend to respond to questions people may ask them about their behaviors with photos of celebrities doing the same thing.

TikTok user @oliviaeig, for example, responds to the question: “Why do you wear heels when you are already tall” with a series of photos of supermodel Kendall Jenner also wearing heels. To watch more videos, use the links below:

There are over 500,000 videos hashtaged #mamasaythatsok #mamasaid, that use the Mama Said song so far, with the most popular video amassing over eight million likes.

The challenge is so popular because like many TikTok trends, the music used is just a gateway to sharing a funny moment or commonly shared feelings or experience with people to express themselves.

The experiences referenced in this trend are quite wide-ranging including everything from childhood memories to explanation of why people wear or do certain things currently.

So next time you’re not sure about something — mama said it was okay!
